Dr. Dennis Jones – Professor of Computer Information Systems

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Dennis G. Jones received a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University, masters’ degrees in administration and supervision from Marquette University as well as business administration from Tarleton State University. Additionally, he received a doctorate in Supervision, Curriculum and Instruction in Higher Education from Texas A&M University – Commerce.

In 1992, his initial academic appointment at Tarleton was in the College of Education. During his tenure in this College, he implemented the first technology components of the curriculum that was completed by teacher education students.

In 1996, he accepted a joint appointment in the Center of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning (now the Center for Instructional Innovation) and the College of Business Administration. While at the Center, he mentored faculty members who developed the first online courses at the University.

In 1999, he moved to a full-time faculty position in Computer Information Systems and assisted in implementing the first fully online degree program at the University (i.e., Master of Science in Information Systems) until accepting an administrative appointment to lead the Division of General Studies (now Student Success & Multicultural Initiatives) in 2003.

Beginning in Fall 2012, Dr. Jones returned to a full-time faculty position as a Professor of Computer Information Systems.

Dr. Jones serves as a member of the Graduate faculty and has been recognized for his teaching. He has received the O.A. Grant for Teaching Excellence Award and the Student Government Association, Educator of the Year Award.

His scholarship has revolved around the use of technology in the teaching and learning process. Products of his research include a book; book chapters; several published conference proceedings; as well as numerous presentations at national and international conferences.

Recently, Dr. Jones has been involved in implementing a budget planning system and consulting on a business intelligence project. Previously, he managed the original implementation of Tarleton’s degree evaluation system (i.e., DegreeWorks) and two IT-related contracts between Tarleton and the Texas Department of Health.
