Bat Conservation

The overall objective of this project is to document bat diversity across the state of Texas prior to the arrival of white-nose syndrome. More specifically, we will (1) delineate the spatial distribution of bats in Texas and identify key environmental correlates, (2) estimate population sizes using a combination of acoustic monitors, harp traps, and mist nets, (3) determine areas in Texas most susceptible to white-nose syndrome based on species composition and abundance patterns, and (4) collect reference calls from Texas bats ti improve auto-classification software.

The two figures below illustrate how acoustic signals can differ among species.

Acoustic signal from a eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis).

Acoustic signal from a Brazialian free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis).
