Physical, chemical, and biologic characteristics of soils are studied to evaluate soils as elements in land use planning and environmental quality.

Topics include: introduction to soil classification, land capability classification, soil erosion/conservation, moisture status evaluation, waste disposal, reclamation, and cation exchange capacity.

This course is a hybrid course and the use of Blackboard Learning Management System is required.  A hybrid course has a traditional face-to-face component and an online component. In addition to face-to-face lecture and online learning components, this course has a required discussion/laboratory section.

The student is expected to have familiarity with soils at a level equivalent to an upper division undergraduate introduction to soils course, exempli gratia WSES3401 Soils.

The course will focus on the applied use of soil physical and chemical information for soil classification, land use capability classification, soil erosion and conservation practices, moisture status evaluation, waste disposal, reclamation, engineering practices, and cation exchange capacity. The laboratory will require student to apply information gained from lectures regarding natural and technical classification systems to soils utilizing soils morphologic characteristics and laboratory characterization data.

  • Knowledge outcomes: Students will demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of technical classification systems utilized in grading soils for land use.
  • Skills outcomes: Students will be able to apply a broad array of technical classification systems used to grade soils for appropriate land use.
  • Value outcomes: Students will appreciate the successful completion of a strenuous class requiring the integration of problem solving skills, technical and practical application of soils knowledge, intensive studying, etc. as related to the subject matter.
